Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to improve the teamwork of nurses in an operating room using action research and to identify the effect of that.

Methods: This study performed two cycles of planning, performing, evaluating and reflecting to improve the teamwork through individual and group interviews. The participants were nine peri-operative nurses working in a general hospital in Daegu, Korea.

Results: The two cycles of this action research were performed successfully with active participation of the participants. The results of this study showed decreased error rate of nurse's record in the operating room and increased official announcement of new information. The error rate of nurse's record in the operating room has decreased and the official announcement of new information has increased in the first and second round compared with the former periods. In the final phase of this research, the participants reflected positive experiences such as self- confidence, stability in doing jobs and shared feeling with the colleagues.

Conclusions: This study showed that the action research was useful to improve the teamwork of nurses in an operating room especially in solving the problems affecting teamwork of the nurses.
